The Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Community Technology Preview 3 (CTP 3) Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) was a pre-configured virtual machine environment released by Microsoft in late 2011. It was specifically designed to give IT professionals and database administrators a zero-configuration environment to test the breakthrough features of SQL Server 2012 (then codenamed “Denali”) without having to install it on bare metal.
Because CTP 3 was a pre-production preview, its evaluation license expired in mid-2012. The original “direct download” links from the official Microsoft Download Center (previously hosted under ID 27740) have long been decommissioned. What Was Included in the CTP 3 VHD?
The VHD was distributed as a fully constructed virtual environment, built primarily to showcase Microsoft’s updated Business Intelligence (BI) stack. It included: Operating System: Windows Server 2008 R2.
Database Engine: SQL Server 2012 CTP 3 Enterprise pre-installed.
Integrated Stack: Full integration with SharePoint 2010 and Office 2010.

Hard Expiration: The virtual machine was time-bombed. It will refuse to boot or run SQL services unless the host system hypervisor clock is manually rolled back to late 2011/early 2012.
Security Risks: The OS and SQL Server editions inside this VHD lack over a decade of critical security patches, making them highly vulnerable if connected to any modern network.
