How to Fix SMRecorder Audio Sync and Video Export Issues SMRecorder is a lightweight, classic tool for capturing desktop screens and audio. However, many users encounter two frustrating problems: video and audio drifting out of sync, or export processes failing completely.
These issues usually happen because of outdated codecs, mismatched sample rates, or high CPU usage during recording. Here is how to fix these errors and get your recordings working perfectly. 1. Fix Audio and Video Out of Sync
Audio desynchronization happens when your computer cannot process the video frames and audio data at the exact same speed. Match the Sample Rates
Mismatched sample rates between your Windows microphone settings and SMRecorder cause audio drift over time. Right-click the Speaker icon in your Windows taskbar.
Select Sounds or Sound Settings, then open the Control Panel.
Go to the Recording tab, right-click your microphone, and select Properties.
Under the Advanced tab, check the Default Format (e.g., 44,100 Hz or 48,000 Hz).
Open SMRecorder, go to Settings, and change the audio sample rate to match that exact number. Lower the Video Frame Rate
High frame rates demand more processing power. If your CPU bottlenecks, SMRecorder drops video frames while the audio keeps running, ruining the sync. Open SMRecorder Settings. Navigate to the Video tab. Lower the frame rate from 30 FPS to 15 FPS or 24 FPS.
This reduces the load on your processor and keeps the tracks aligned. Change the Audio Compression Codec
Some compressed audio formats do not multiplex well with video containers in SMRecorder.
In the SMRecorder settings menu, locate the Audio Compressor dropdown. Switch the codec to PCM (Uncompressed) if available.
Uncompressed audio takes up more file space but eliminates sync lag during recording. 2. Resolve Video Export Failures
Export failures usually result in corrupt files, zero-byte videos, or “Failed to save” error messages. Run SMRecorder as Administrator
SMRecorder often fails to export files because Windows blocks it from writing data to protected system folders. Right-click the SMRecorder icon on your desktop. Select Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab. Check the box for Run this program as an administrator. Click Apply and restart the software. Change the Output Directory
Saving videos directly to the C: drive root folder or a synced cloud folder (like OneDrive or Dropbox) can interrupt the export process. Open SMRecorder Settings. Look for the Output Directory or Save Path option.
Change the destination to a local, non-synced folder like C:\Users\Public\Videos</code> or a dedicated folder on your desktop. Use the AVI Container Format
SMRecorder handles the AVI format much more reliably than other formats.
In your recording settings, set the output video format to AVI.
Avoid MP4 settings inside this specific legacy software, as its built-in MP4 encoders are prone to crashing during the final multiplexing phase. 3. Alternative Solutions
If you apply these fixes and SMRecorder still lags or fails to export, the software may be struggling with your modern operating system or hardware.
Use HandBrake to repair synced files: If you have an exported video with broken sync, run it through the free tool HandBrake. Export it again while selecting the Constant Framerate option to force the audio and video back together.
Switch to modern software: SMRecorder is older technology. If troubleshooting fails, switch to OBS Studio or ShareX. Both options are free, open-source, and natively handle modern hardware acceleration without audio sync issues.
To help narrow down the exact cause of your recording issues, let me know: Which Windows operating system version are you running?
What video format (AVI, MP4, etc.) are you currently trying to export?
Are you recording a webcam, video gameplay, or a simple desktop presentation?
I can provide specific codec settings or alternative tool recommendations based on your setup.
